What is pay-per-click (PPC) advertisement:

 

Pay-Per-Click or PPC is a form of Internet advertisement used on search engines, advertising networks and content websites. With this type of advertisement the advertisers only pay when a user clicks on their advertisement, which in turn brings the user to the advertiser’s website.

 

In the case of search engines, advertisers bid on keywords that when a user applies on a search query it  places the advertisers’ ads on a top ranking spot of the search engine’s results next to the natural or organic results. (see illustration to the right)

 

In other cases, keywords are use to place the ads on relevant content websites and, as in the case of search engines, advertisers only pay when a user clicks on their advertisement.
